Types of Bourbon

Bourbon is now made in all 50 states across the USA. There’s little scope for great experimentation, however the rich breadth of flavours and styles are explained here.

Types of Bourbon

Rye

- Must be made with  51% minimum rye included in the initial mash bill.

- Must not be distilled higher than 160proof (80% ABV)

- Must be aged in: new, charred white oak (no minimum time specified)

Wheated Bourbons

- 18% Minimum Wheat must be included in the initial mash bill.

Tennessee

- Must be a minimum of 51% corn

- Must not be distilled higher than 160 proof (80% ABV)

- Must be aged in: new, charred white oak (no minimum time specified)

- Filtration process through maple charcoal prior to ageing (Lincoln County Process) - a defining element of the taste profile

- Must be produced in the state of Tennessee

Single Barrel

- Single Barrel Bourbon whiskey must be bottled from one barrel from one distillery.
