As bars across the world begin to re-open, we’re enjoying the outside spaces created by some of our favourite venues. If you’re looking for inspiration for your own al fresco drinking and dining areas, here are a few spots you’ll not want to miss.


Solas at The Savoy with Bowmore Whisky, London 

London can’t stop the rain, but The Savoy can protect you from it. Introducing ‘Solas’, the new terrace launched in collaboration with Bowmore Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky earlier this month.  

What's Solas? That’s Gaelic for light, joy and comfort. Naturally, it delivers on all three. Never one to do things by halves, at the heart of Solas is a grand chandelier inspired by the 62 chandeliers that grace the hotel, fused with the drama of the black rocks of the Scottish coastline where Bowmore whisky is crafted. This five-metre-wide artwork will send rays of light from suspended shards of crystal, decanters and stoppers. The Bowmore bar also reflects the two brands, bringing together natural slate and granite with gleaming brass, and is backed by a presentation of Bowmore bottles.  

With a focus on quality, the Savoy’s chefs have prepared only the freshest, responsibly sourced seafood, including: delicious lobster rolls, gravadlax, blue shrimp ceviche and an Oyster Luge Experience which sees Carlingford, Maldon and Jersey oysters paired with Bowmore expressions, ranging from the 12yo to the very exclusive 27yo. For those with a sweet tooth, the homemade Coffee & Bowmore 15yo ice cream is a must. Remember, you’re researching - it’s literally your job to try everything.  

As London’s most historic hotel, The Savoy has created an outdoor space that feels like a true extension of the building. With the spectacular raw seafood bar and expertly crafted cocktails (our favourite is the James Bond inspired Golden Eye), this is a true five-star experience, and even the rain can’t dampen our spirits.  


The ROKU Japanese Gin Garden at Nobu Portman Square  

A hop, skip or jump (or a quick taxi) away in Marylebone, two titans of Japanese food and drink have teamed up to launch a luxury outdoor dining experience, Nobu Portman Square’s ROKU Japanese Gin Garden.  

The Japanese inspired garden is a true celebration of spring, incorporating natural and organic elements of indigenous Japanese flora and foliage with soft pink lanterns that recreate the unmistakable glow of Sakura flowers bringing Haru to the city. With exceptional Japanese craftsmanship at the heart of both Nobu Portman Square and ROKU Gin, you’ll experience the very best bespoke food, drinks and service.  

Based upon the Japanese culinary concept of ‘shun’ – to enjoy food and drink in their proper season – each cocktail will include ingredients harvested at the peak of their flavour; from the Sakura flower harvested in the spring, to green tea in the summer. Hot tip: Try the Shun Martini and choose from ROKU Gin or Toki Whisky with two different flavour combinations – Raspberry and Sakura or Green Tea and Peach.   

As always, Nobu delivers a fully immersive experience, encompassing sights, sounds and smells which - although not quite as fanciful as a trip to Japan – will leave you feeling well-rested, inspired, and (dare we say it) ready for more.  

The ROKU Japanese Gin Garden at Nobu Portman Square will be open for lunch and dinner until 31 July 2021. Bookings are recommended.
